In Vedic timekeeping, a tithi represents a lunar day, defined as the time it takes for the longitudinal angle between the Moon and the Sun to increase by 12°. Tithis vary in duration from approximately 19 to 26 hours, with their start times varying throughout the day. Tithis are crucial in the Indian Almanac or Panchang, as Hindu festivals and ceremonies are calculated based on them. The Hindu calendar system is lunar-based, consisting of twelve months and totaling 354 days per lunar year. This differs from the commonly used Georgian (English) calendar, which follows the solar (Sun) system and consists of 365 ¼ days.

To reconcile the solar year with the lunar year, an additional month called Adhik Maas (Extra Month) is added to the Hindu calendar every three years.
